From all of us at Bets Pets, We Wish You and Your Loved Ones, a Very Happy and Healthy New Year, 2015. Our lovely Betty White, dressed in a dazzling red outfit for the Holidays, was a guest on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson last week. Craig mentioned that he knew one of her favorite Christmas songs was “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”.
Betty got a big surprise when the curtain opened and a chorus began joyfully singing the song. Betty was thrilled and joined in to sing and clapped her hands, then out came a pink hippo dancing on stage. Betty couldn't resist and sang and danced with the hippo. Latter Betty, Craig, and the hippo were joined by another friendly face, a horse costume character who pranced around dancing and singing along with them. This video is sure to get you into the Holiday spirit. From all of us at Bets' Pets Official Betty White Fan Club, we wish you a Wonderful, Safe, and Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday. In New York, people marched to Macy's store on 34th Street dressed in vibrant costumes with floats, professional bands and live animals. Orangutans are one of Betty White's favorite animals. She is fascinated by their intelligence and how different they are from other primates. In 2012, a baby orangutan at the Greater Los Angeles Zoo was named Elka Ostrovsky in honor of Betty's character in the TV sitcom, "Hot in Cleveland". Betty said during an interview, "How appropriate that the most beautiful baby orangutan ever is named for my 'Hot in Cleveland' character Elka Ostrovsky," I'm truly thrilled that TV Land's generous contribution is supporting my beloved Los Angeles Zoo."
Baby Elka, is a Bornean orangutan, and the second baby for the Zoo's female Bornean orangutan, Kalim and father Minyak, one of two orangutan males at the Zoo. Minyak is genetically valuable because both of his parents were born in the wild which means, that he is not related to any of the other orangutans in the zoo's. Minyak passed away later that year from a respiratory illness he had since he was an infant. His daughters will carry on his valuable bloodline. Orangutans are native to the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. In the Malay language orangutan means "man of the forest". They have long, shaggy, orange-red hair. Males are twice the size of females with an arm span of about 7 feet. Orangutans are the largest tree-dwelling mammals. Bornean orangutans are endangered and Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered. In the last 60 years, it's estimated that there has been more than a 50 percent decline in the orangutan population. This rapid decline is primarily due to illegal logging, mining, farming, palm oil plantations, and human overpopulation. Orangutans have a close mother-offspring relationship. They are very nurturing and gentle with their young. Offspring remain with their mothers for seven to eight years. They nurse from their moms for at least the first three years of their lives until they slowly start to become more independent. Adult males are the most solitary of the apes, whereas females travel with their youngsters and at times with other females as well. In zoos when orangutan moms are not able to care for their young for a variety of reasons, zoo keepers will step in and do everything possible to support mom and infant in hopes that the mom can overcome whatever obstacles she has, so she can care for her infant. In January of 2014, a male Bornean orangutan named Kecil was born at the Ohio’s Toledo Zoo, but his mom showed little interest in caring for him as did a surrogate mom at Milwaukee County Zoo, where there was very little bonding. In June of 2014, Kecil, which was then 6-month-old, was transferred to Brookfield Zoo near Chicago to be introduced to a surrogate mom, Maggie, the zoo’s 53-year-old orangutan. Maggie had experienced raising young of her own and was also a surrogate mom to another baby in the past. Maggie is calm and laid back and is also very patient, loves to play, and rarely stirs up trouble. These are some of the qualities that make her an ideal candidate to be a surrogate mom. Kecil and Maggie are a perfect match and doing very well together. For adults, its an excuse to dress up for Halloween parties. Many people spend hours watching horror movies, or visiting haunted houses.
Even though Halloween is a fun holiday, people have to be watchful for the ones who pull pranks as well. Some people like to scare others, and play a trick on them. If you have a black cat, keep it indoors so no one will steal him to use as a prank. Have fun, but be respectful toward others. Pet Safety During Halloween Remember that human treats are not usually good for dogs! Keep all of these "human goodies" far out of your dog's reach. Candy - especially chocolate - can be extremely toxic to your dog. Artificially sweetened candy, gum and other goodies may also contain xylitol, a highly toxic substance. Dogs may also ingest food wrappers, causing a risk of choking, upset stomach or gastrointestinal blockage. Various party snacks can be too salty and may contain ingredients that can poison your dog. Halloween Decorations Your pets may be curious about new objects around the house, and that includes Halloween decorations. Be sure decorations are not in areas where your pets could ingest them or knock them over. Be careful with the placement of jack-o-lanterns. Many pets like pumpkin and try to eat it. Also, candles can be knocked over, potentially burning your pet and/or starting a fire. Other decorations can be eaten as well or broken, causing serious harm to your pet. Have fun and decorate - just think about your pet first! Trick-or-Treaters and Guest Though many dogs love visitors, some can become fearful of strangers. Many dogs will even be afraid of people they know if those people are in costumes. Plus, constant ringing of the doorbell might get your dog over-excited or very stressed out. Think about your dog's typical reaction to visitors and take extra precautions for Halloween. Keep your dog at a distance when greeting trick-or-treaters by putting up a baby gate or confining him to another area of the home. If your dog seems afraid of guests in costumes, remove him from the situation calmly. During parties and loud gatherings, your pet might do best in another area of your home unless he is used to these types of events. Halloween can be a fun time of year for the whole family - even your pet. However, there are also many potential dangers and sources of stress for your pet. From all of us at Bets' Pets, Have a Safe and Happy Halloween. Booooo |
