The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a sitcom aired on CBS from 1970-1977. The show stared Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards, who was a single woman, who finds work as an associate producer in a small television newsroom. Mary later becomes producer of the show.
Other cast members included Mary's tough boss Lou Grant (Ed Asner) Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod) the humorous newswriter, and dim-witted anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight).
Mary rents a studio apartment from landlady Phyllis Lindstrom (Cloris Leachman), and becomes best friends with an upstairs neighbor Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper). Later in the series, sweet natured Georgette Franklin (Georgia Engel), came in to play Ted Baxter's girlfriend, and later, wife.
In 1973,during the fourth season, the cast of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" , were looking for another woman role. They wanted a Betty White type actress to play a character named Sue Ann Nivens, who was a man-hungry, Happy Homemaker, who could cook, clean, and fix anything. The casting director wanted to get Betty White for the role, but since Betty was best friends with Mary, they didn't want it to be awkward if it didn't work out. Finally they called Betty and she got the part to play Sue Ann, which was fun to play and changed Betty's career.
Sue Ann Nivens was the star on "The Happy Homemaker", one of Mary Richards shows on WJM-TV. During the show, Sue Ann gave advice on cooking and decorating. Sue Ann was a sweet and perfect homemaker on the show, but in real life, she was self-centered, two-faced, cruel, insulting, and very messy. Not to mention, she wanted every man she could get Sue Ann had a long time crush on Lou Grant, Mary's boss, and finally got him in bed during the sixth season. Lou tried hard to make sure none of the other WJM staff would find out about it.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show had great writers, and received high praise from critics as one of the most acclaimed televison programs ever produced in US television history. The show won the Emmy Awards three years in a row, (1975-1977) for Outstanding Comedy Series. In 2013, the Mary Tyler Moore Show was ranked, number 6 in its list of the 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time, by the Writers Guild of America.
