Saturday September 19, 2015 we celebrate, International Red Panda Day. It is a day filled with activities and knowledge about the Red Panda, conservation and research.
Red Panda Facts
Red pandas are found in the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China high up in forest mountain terrains. They have soft thick reddish-brown fur, with brownish black limbs and belly. The bottom of their feet have very thick fur, which keeps them warm when walking on ice and snow. They use their long bushy tail for balance and to cover themselves from cold and windy weather conditions. Since they live mostly in trees, Red pandas have sharp claws to help them climb and stay firm on the branches. They have very strong jaws to chew on bamboo.
Red panda's are about the size of a cat and can be 12 to 20 pounds
Red pandas are generally solitary, except during mating and caring for their young which is about a year. Breeding season is in late fall and into winter. They are pregnant for about 4 months usually giving birth to 1-4 cubs in spring or summer. They usually build their nest in a hollow tree trunk.
The red panda’s diet is mostly of bamboo. They usually only eat the youngest, most tender shoots and leaves of bamboo. During the spring and summer, they will also eat insects and fruit.
In captivity, most zoo's feed them bamboo, nuts, seeds, insects, grubs, berries, grapes, apples, and leaf eater biscuits.
Red pandas are acrobatic animals and love to play and roll in the snow as you can see by this wonderful video of the red panda's at the Cincinnati Zoo.
